I brought a white Ukulele earlier in the week and it is a lot of fun to play Hawaiian covers of my favourite songs. The reason I actually brought it was because I am soon to be getting a Banjolin for a pirate themed band (that I have been planning to start for nearly 2 years) and being a guitarist I have no real idea how to play one. I found out the Ukues are the same tuning so I brought one to get the hang of it a little. Boring back story aside I do enjoy the sound that my crappy 30 dollar ukulele makes and decided that it could have a place in the pirate band as well. It also occurred to me that a Ukulele is potentially the most original canvas ever so I decided to spend the weekend pimpin’ my ukue the same way I imagine Kanye would (if he had musical talent.) You can see it below and if it interests you, click below it and read about how I made it.
I hear what you are saying, “Levi, what kind of idiot do you take me for? A competent artist would have simply painted the design onto the Ukue and it’s finished. Process over.” And you are right; a less competent artist however, (aka me) has to cheat. Plus this Ukue cost me 30 good dollars and I didn’t want to wreck it. My first step was to a design a pattern. I then used my light box to trace the pattern onto some Duracell, this sticker is then placed onto the ukulele. The lines are then cut out using a modelling knife. I then painted over the sticker and when the paint dried I peeled off all the stickers. This worked pretty well. I think I would recommend using spray paint instead though because the Acrylic paint I used peeled a little bit when I removed the stencil.
- Here she blows! I might make another full colour one in the future.
